Academia: Research and Teaching

Research

Evidence-based medicine underpins everything at South Coast Vision. While Mr Turnbull offers state-of-the-art technology and the very latest techniques, all of these have been thoroughly and ethically researched to ensure they are the best available and that you will receive the very best standard of treatment.

Mr Turnbull has a strong research track-record and has published extensively in the academic literature. He is currently a sub-investigator for the DREAMM-7 study, a randomised controlled trial investigating treatments for multiple myeloma and their ocular side effects.

He has delivered many academic presentations both nationally and across the world, and has been invited to contribute chapters in textbooks and expert opinion pieces in industry journals. He is a reviewer for several specialist journals including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Translational Vision Science and Technology, Scientific Reports and the European Journal of Ophthalmology.

Teaching

As an NHS Consultant, Cataract Surgery Lead and College Tutor at University Hospitals Dorset, Mr Turnbull is responsible for teaching other eye surgeons and has a keen interest in developing junior eye doctors into excellent cataract surgeons. Other surgeons may observe Mr Turnbull's private practice at South Coast Vision, but all surgery is performed by Mr Turnbull himself.

He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education for Surgeons, and has been on the training faculty for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Microsurgical Skills course since 2017. Mr Turnbull was also asked to serve on the faculty of the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons’ Advanced Trainees Programme in 2019.

Having achieved a Distinction in the RCOphth Postgraduate Diploma of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Mr Turnbull was subsequently invited by Professor Reinstein of the London Vision Clinic to be a tutor on the course. He has now been awarded the title of Visiting Professor and leads the refractive lens surgery and phakic lens implant modules.

He has also been invited to be a guest speaker for College of Optometrists' Continuing Education and Training programme, and for the Global Education and Research Society of Ophthalmology (GERSO).
